So I looked around, and tried thinking of ways that I could offset some of the upkeep costs of these blogs, but the only solution I came up with was activating Ad Sense on The Lore Hunter. This is a whole new experience for me, but I tried to make sure the ads were minimal and unobtrusive. I still feel kind of uneasy and gross about it though. Perhaps I'm overreacting, but I can't help but worry that ads send the message that it is any less of a hobby, or that I am running these blogs to make money. It is a means to upgrade the domain names, and hopefully make them even more accessible.
All of that being said, I wanted to throw all of this out there for feedback and suggestions. Are the ads worth it? Is there a better way to offset upkeep costs? I really value any feedback. Thanks for reading.
You can also use PayPal and ask for donations, create a tip jar, so to speak. Then I don't know about if Patreon works with blogs but that another option.
ReplyDeleteThese things are a lot of work and take serious time to put together. People right now are making a lot of money streaming games and uploading to YouTube, so monetizing your sight fits in with what the community is doing. Plus, as we get older we just don't have as much time to screw around and wouldn't it be awesome to make money doing what we love. Go for it. You are offering a quality product. Think about the PayPal thing though because it cuts out the middle man; or do both. Let me know how it goes.
By the way, it old be cool if I could send I friend request through PSN. What do you think?
Thanks for the feedback! You are right, it is a TON of work maintaining these sites, which is why I am especially hesitant to put up ads. If I'm going to put in the effort, I want to make sure it is something that others can enjoy as well, and if ads ruin the experience for people then its not worth it to me.
DeleteAnd you could certainly send a request! My PSN is dropkickzombies.
Not sure how they could possibly ruin the experience given the fact that every place on the Internet is loaded w/ ads but it doesn't stop anybody from using those sights. It seems there is a trend amongst gamers that making money off of content we create is somehow disrespectful, yet no one blinks when donating 5 dollars to a girl streaming who doesn't know how to play video games but she has a nice rack. Look, this is coming from someone who is so liberal I am a few steps away from socialism. So encouraging ads as a way to make money is NOT encouraged flippantly.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind ads that don't pop up. And a donation option would be great. I really think this and the DS3 blog spot are fantastic archives of discussion and should be preserved. If there's ever a donation option I would gladly throw some money your way every once in a while. This has become my new favourite site.
ReplyDeleteLuke, thanks for the incredibly kind words! That really means a lot. Please feel no pressure, but if you're ever inclined to donate, there is a Paypal link along the right hand side.
