Bloodborne’s Hidden Backstory Finally Explained

The following content was originally posted here by Ian LepkowskyI'm a little (very) late with this one, but it is a good piece! Note: This was written prior to The Old Hunters, but I don't think that invalidates anything in the article.

This article discusses the history of Bloodborne, from the ancient Pthumerians to the Healing Church and the Hunters.

Ghosts of the Uncivil Dead

This video by Neo Loki presents in a poetic fashion their take on the tragic events that befell the ancient Pthumerian race.

I don’t tend to add comments about the content that I post. The fact that it is being posted is in itself a comment that I think this is something of quality and that it adds something to the discussion of the lore and narrative of Bloodborne.

That being said, I have to admit that this is one of my favorite pieces that I have posted. Most of what I post are videos and articles that aspire to present convincing proof that validates a certain interpretation of the world of Bloodborne. This video, however, engages the viewer on an emotional level, conveying the tragedy of the Pthumerians. While it may not be your typical lore post, it conveys the drama of an aspect of Bloodborne where I generally don’t feel an emotional connection, and does it in a wonderfully artistic way.

The Story So Far: The Chalice Dungeon

This article covers the information released so far about the Forbidden Forest. For an overview about the story so far, see this article.

The Chalice Dungeon

Deep underneath Yharnam exists ruins thought to be an ancient resting place for something other than humans. It is rumored that these ruins change their shape depending upon the hunter. Guarding these ruins are ancient guard dogs, beings with stone-like skin and covered in flames.

Also protecting these ruins are hunters. They are born and bred in the ruins, existing on the flesh and blood of the dead. Their skin is pale, and their eyes are black, searching for those who trespass.

The last known inhabitants of these ruins are the ritual masters. Hunters believe that they pray for the resting through a unique ritual. Their appearance and demeanor are horrifying to those that do not know them, unfounded or not. Regardless, they are known to perform a dark and ancient ceremony that few live to talk about.

Questions

  • Who built/was laid to rest in these ruins?
  • Why do the Protectors/Ritual Masters protect the ruins, and under whose direction?
  • What does the Chalice Ritual do, and why do the ruins change shape?
  • Do the Ritual Masters, with their prayer for the resting, have any connection to the messengers or the Nightmare World?
